DOB: 8/17/29. POB: Burdine, KY. DOD: 8/1/77. POD: Santa Barbara, CA. Shot down 5/1/60 at Sverdlovsky USSR in U-2. Tried and convicted of spying in Moscow August 1960. LHO write his brother that "Powers seemed like an all-American boy when I saw him in Moscow." (WC Vol 16, p. 871) Released in 1962 in exchange for convicted Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. On pages 363-364 of Operation Overflight, he blames Oswald for giving the Russians the ability to "shoot the U-2 down." Killed in crash of helicopter.
